S 127 “And I shall see his face”: The Sacramental Hymns of John Newton and William Cowper

The Evangelical Revival of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was a period of profound religious renewal in England. Yet a relatively unknown aspect of the movement is its rich vein of sacramental hymn-writing.

The biblical, mystical, spiritual, visionary, joyful and doctrinal riches within the seven featured hymns still today speak deeply to soul and spirit. Furthermore, they speak of a vital aspect of evangelical witness and experience—the sacrament and preaching of the cross.

Philip was a curate in Manchester, a lecturer in Biblical Studies in Umuahia, Nigeria, and St John's College, Nottingham, and then chaplain at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before returning to lecturing in Biblical Studies in the Selly Oak Colleges, and now at the University of Birmingham. One of the founding members of the Grove Spirituality Group, he has always been fascinated by the relationship between the Scriptural text and the Spiritual life. He is increasingly married to Debbie and they have three growing-up children.
