Description
James has often suffered from Luther’s assessment of it as ‘an epistle of straw’ and from the perception that its apparent emphasis on works is theologically inferior to Paul’s emphasis on faith. This study redresses the balance by showing that James is setting out an ‘ethical trajectory’ (in much the way Jesus did) that encourages moral responsibility and seeks to build virtuous communities of grace. It includes an appendix exploring the issue of faith and works in relation to Paul and the Jewish context they shared.
