Discussions of abortion in Christian and secular ethics are often focussed, appropriately enough, on the morality of the act itself. But less attention is given to the actual process by which individuals seek the consent of doctors, operating under the law, to authorise abortions. This study argues that this process itself – by which 20% of all pregnancies in England and Wales are terminated legally – urgently needs analysing and questioning, not least because of the intolerable position it places our GPs in.
